Department Overview

The Nursing Department at Menelik II Health Science College is one of the oldest and most established departments within the College, with a long-standing tradition of excellence in nursing education and training. It implements a comprehensive curriculum that effectively integrates theoretical instruction with supervised clinical practice. The Nursing Department places strong emphasis on patient-centered care, professional integrity, and adherence to established standards of practice.

Functions and Responsibilities

Mandated to educate, train, and graduate competent, compassionate, and community-focused nursing professionals.

Core Mandates
  • Education & Training: Design, deliver, and evaluate evidence-based academic and clinical curricula for Junior Clinical Nursing and other programs.
  • Clinical Competence: Provide supervised, high-quality clinical practice in affiliated hospitals, health centres, and community settings.
  • Faculty Development: Promote continuous professional development, research engagement, and mentorship for staff.
  • Community Engagement: Serve as a primary link between the college and the community through public health campaigns.

Hands-on Skill Labs
  • Operating and managing the Nursing Skills Laboratory to provide a safe, high-fidelity simulation environment for students to practice procedures before patient contact.

Integrated Clinical Rotations
  • Coordinating structured rotations for students in diverse clinical areas, including medical, surgical, pediatric, and maternity units.

Public Health Outreach
  • Annually conducting at least two major community health campaigns focusing on prevalent health issues in Addis Ababa.

Curriculum Review
  • Conducting bi-annual reviews of the curriculum and teaching methodologies to align with the latest advancements in nursing science.

Interprofessional Collaboration
  • Participating in joint training sessions and academic activities with other college departments to promote a team-based approach.
