School Overview

Menelik II Medical and Health Science College is a leading public institution under the Addis Ababa City Administration, with over 75 years of excellence in training competent health-care professionals. Re-established under Proclamation 153/15 by the Addis Ababa Health Bureau, the College continues to strengthen its academic structure to meet national health priorities. The School of Allied Health Science, formally established as a major academic division in 2024/2025, plays a central role in advancing quality health science education. Since its establishment in 2017 E.C., the School has focused on academic excellence by aligning staff qualifications with programme needs. The school consists of seven specialized departments: the Department of Anesthesia, the Department of Biomedical Science, the Department of Medical Laboratory Science, the Department of Medical Radiology Technology, the Department of Pharmacy, the Department of Radiotherapy Technology, and the Department of Health Informatics.

Functions and Responsibilities

The School of Allied Health Science is mandated to produce competent, ethical, and community-oriented allied health professionals who contribute effectively to Ethiopia’s health-care system.
  • Deliver high-quality undergraduate and postgraduate programmes aligned with national and international standards.
  • Design, implement, and continuously review competency-based curricula.
  • Promote applied, community-based, and evidence-based research.
  • Strengthen partnerships with hospitals, research institutions, and health bureaus to enhance clinical training and professional development.
  • Ensure continuous quality improvement through academic audits, staff development, and performance evaluation.
  • Uphold professional ethics, accountability, and academic excellence.
  • Engage in community service, health promotion, and outreach initiatives that support national health priorities.

Major Activities

  • Coordinate teaching–learning activities across the seven departments under the School.
  • Organize clinical attachments and laboratory practice in collaboration with affiliated hospitals and health centers.
  • Implement Continuing Professional Development (CPD) programmes for health-care professionals and graduates.
  • Conduct research and innovation projects addressing public health and allied health science needs.
  • Host workshops, seminars, and academic conferences to promote knowledge sharing and interdisciplinary collaboration.
  • Support community-based health campaigns, screenings, and awareness programmes in partnership with the Addis Ababa Health Bureau.
  • Establish and strengthen research and simulation laboratories to enhance practical skills and innovation capacity.
  • Build partnerships with governmental and non-governmental organisations for internships and joint academic initiatives.
