Menelik II Medical and Health Science College traces its history to 1949, when it was founded as the Auxiliary Health Science Training School with a handful of students. The College is one of the early pioneers of healthcare education in Ethiopia. Since then, it has gradually evolved with the establishment of diverse programs, continually expanding its role in producing skilled health professionals to meet the country's growing healthcare needs.

In 1977, nursing education in Ethiopia was restructured at the national level, leading to the adoption of a single category of nurse — the Comprehensive Nursing — capable of providing services across all levels of health institutions. In line with this national reform, Menelik II Nursing School undertook the responsibility of recruiting and training competent health professionals to address the pressing health needs of the community and respond to the realities of the time.

Building on its strong foundation, the College undertook a strategic expansion in 1997 to diversify its academic offerings. During this period, it introduced several certificate-level programs, including Junior Clinical Nursing, Public Health, Midwifery, Medical Laboratory, Pharmacy, and Radiography. This expansion aimed to respond to the growing demand for skilled health professionals and to strengthen the national healthcare workforce.

The College continued its expansion in 2008, when it was upgraded to Menelik II Health Science College, becoming a mid-level and higher education institution under the Addis Ababa City Government. This milestone strengthened the College's mandate to provide long-term education in health sciences. Building on this foundation, in 2015 the College launched degree programs in four key departments: Nursing, Medical Laboratory Technology, Medical Radiology Technology, and Midwifery.

In 2019, Menelik II Health Science Medical College officially merged with Kotebe Metropolitan University and embarked on a continuous reform process aimed at enhancing the quality of education. In 2020, following the Ministry of Science and Higher Education's (MoSHE) classification of Ethiopian universities, Kotebe Metropolitan University was restructured and renamed Kotebe University of Education. As a result of this reform and the divergence in institutional missions, the College was separated from Kotebe University of Education in January 2023.

Currently, the College has established a new organizational structure, with the Senate serving as the highest internal governing body. This newly implemented structure has strengthened governance and enhanced organizational capacity. As part of this initiative, the College is committed to advancing quality education, innovative research, and effective community service. In line with this commitment, it has launched a new strategic vision aimed at fully leveraging its established strengths and institutional capabilities.
