Directorate Overview

The Skill Lab and Demonstration Directorate is a vital operational unit within Menelik II Medical and Health Science College, responsible for managing and coordinating all practical training environments across the College’s campuses. The College operates five specialized demonstration sites: the main Central site and HIT at the Menelik II Campus, and the Pharmacy, Laboratory, and Midwifery sites at the Piassa Campus.

Serving 12 key departments, the Directorate ensures these facilities are well-equipped, maintained, and effectively scheduled. Our mission is to bridge theoretical knowledge with clinical and laboratory competencies, ensuring that every student gains the hands-on experience necessary to become a competent and ethical health professional.

Key Services & Responsibilities

Primary functions and strategic operations

Practical Training Logistics

Scheduling and allocating demonstration sites for 12 departments, ensuring equitable access for all regular and post-basic students.

Facility Maintenance

Overseeing regular maintenance, safety, and cleanliness of all five specialized sites, including simulation tools and manikins.

Skill Lab Policy

Establishing SOPs for site usage, including infection prevention protocols, waste management, and student guidelines.

Inventory Management

Maintaining up-to-date records of training equipment, consumables, and models to ensure zero-gap in supply availability.

Faculty Technical Support

Providing hands-on assistance during practical sessions and training instructors on new simulation techniques.

Health & Safety Compliance

Conducting regular inspections to ensure all training areas meet national safety standards for medical education.

Simulation Excellence

Facilitating realistic scenarios such as emergency response, diagnostics, and neonatal care to enhance student competence.

Multi-Campus Coordination

Synchronizing operations between the Main Campus and Piassa Campus to optimize facility utilization.

Quality Monitoring

Gathering student and instructor feedback to implement continuous improvements in training site functionality.

External Collaboration

Partnering with hospitals and health centers to support internships and joint practical training activities.

Core Functions & Responsibilities

The Office of Skill Lab and Demonstration serves as the central administrative and technical body for all practical training:

  • Coordinate practical training logistics for 12 departments requiring hands-on sessions.
  • Oversee regular maintenance and safety of all five demonstration sites.
  • Develop and implement standardized skill lab policies and infection prevention protocols.
  • Maintain up-to-date inventories of manikins, lab supplies, and simulation tools.
  • Provide technical assistance to faculty during high-stakes practical sessions.
  • Ensure all demonstration areas meet national and institutional safety standards.

Major Educational Activities

Our major activities advance the College’s clinical and laboratory training objectives:

  • Conducting routine equipment checks and calibration (IV simulators, microscopes, etc.).
  • Organizing skill lab orientation sessions for new students at the start of each semester.
  • Facilitating mock clinical exercises for emergency response and medication dispensing.
  • Maintaining a digital logbook of procedures practiced and students trained.
  • Collaborating with department heads to align site availability with curriculum requirements.
  • Leading the annual needs assessment to identify gaps and recommend equipment upgrades.
