Department Overview
The Department of Medical Laboratory Sciences is one of the pioneer academic units in Ethiopia, with formal laboratory training at the College dating back to 1954. Since its establishment, the Department has played a vital role in producing qualified laboratory professionals to strengthen diagnostic services across Addis Ababa and the country. It is committed to delivering quality education, impactful research, and meaningful community service in the field of medical laboratory science. Currently, the Department offers B.Sc. programmes in Medical Laboratory Sciences (Regular Generic and Post-Basic) and a M.Sc. in Medical Microbiology. The Department aspires to expand its postgraduate programmes and continues to contribute to the advancement of laboratory science and public health in Ethiopia.
Functions and Responsibilities
- Deliver high-quality theoretical and practical training through laboratory-based hands-on practice, simulations, and demonstrations.
- Develop, review, and update outcome-based curricula in line with national and international standards.
- Ensure students acquire the required professional competences in medical laboratory sciences.
- Facilitate clinical laboratory attachments and internships in hospitals, research institutes, and advanced diagnostic laboratories.
- Conduct innovative and problem-solving research aligned with national and Addis Ababa City Administration health priorities.
- Provide community services, including laboratory diagnostics, disease prevention, and surveillance activities.
- Implement and maintain quality assurance and quality control systems in teaching and laboratory practice.
- Ensure compliance with national accreditation requirements and quality benchmarks.
- Provide academic advising, mentorship, and career guidance to students.
- Strengthen partnerships and collaborations with hospitals, research centers, and academic institutions.
- Support continuous professional development of academic and technical staff.
Major Activities
- Deliver undergraduate (Generic and Post-Basic B.Sc.) and postgraduate (M.Sc. in Medical Microbiology) programmes.
- Organize laboratory practical sessions, skill-based training, and competency assessments.
- Coordinate clinical placements and internship supervision.
- Conduct multidisciplinary research and publish findings in relevant academic platforms.
- Participate in disease surveillance, outbreak investigations, and public health initiatives.
- Organize seminars, workshops, and academic review meetings.
- Monitor student academic progression and programme quality improvement measures.
- Maintain and utilize well-equipped skills laboratories to support effective training.
