Department Overview

The Operating Theatre Nursing Department is a specialized academic unit within the School of Nursing and Midwifery at Menelik II Medical and Health Science College. The department began admitting and training students in 2023 G.C. and its primary mission is to train highly skilled, ethical, and professionally competent perioperative nurses. The department offers a post-basic training program lasting two and a half years. This program integrates classroom teaching, simulation exercises, and real-world clinical exposure to prepare graduates for essential roles as scrub nurses, circulating nurses, and postoperative care providers. By equipping nurses with advanced theoretical and practical skills, the department plays a vital role in strengthening the surgical workforce and ensuring safe, high-quality surgical care.

The Operating Theatre Nursing Department is tasked with delivering comprehensive perioperative education aimed at producing competent professionals who ensure patient safety and effective surgical outcomes.

  • Plan, coordinate, and implement both theoretical and practical training in operating theatre nursing.
  • Manage academic coordination, including clinical scheduling and student mentorship.
  • Ensure high-quality learning experiences through ongoing assessment and continuous evaluation.
  • Maintain curriculum standards and facilitate faculty development.
  • Align departmental activities with national health priorities and the College’s overarching objectives.
  • Conduct research and encourage evidence-based practice in perioperative nursing.

  • Delivering specialized lectures and conducting simulation and skills laboratory sessions.
  • Organizing and monitor clinical practice placements in hospitals to provide students with real-world experience.
  • Arranging academic demonstrations, case discussions, seminar presentations, and competency assessments to enhance perioperative skills.
  • Assessing students through theoretical exams, practical evaluations, and clinical performance assessments.
  • Developing teaching materials, guidelines, and training manuals.
  • Conducting curriculum reviews and participating in institutional workshops.
  • Engaging in academic research and community service activities through collaboration with other staffs.
  • Preparing departmental reports, plans, and academic documents.
