Department Overview

The Department of Surgical Nursing at Menelik II Medical and Health Science College is dedicated to excellence in education, clinical practice, research, and community service. The department prepares competent and compassionate nurses equipped with the knowledge and skills required to deliver safe, effective, and evidence-based surgical care across perioperative and postoperative settings.

Functions and Responsibilities

The department handles comprehensive administrative and academic mandates to ensure institutional excellence.

Core Mandates
  • Initiate the introduction and/or revision of academic programs and recommend to School.
  • Initiate and facilitate research proposals.
  • Process the promotion of academic staff and recommend advancements.
  • Recommend recruitment, leaves, development and discipline of administrative staff.
  • Prepare plans and budget of their respective departments and submit to School.
  • Initiate external relations and forge partnerships with academic and research institutions.
  • Invite, select and recruit students for admission as per regulations.
  • Process and approve the academic status of students and recommend graduation.
  • Oversee the wellbeing of students and facilitate academic advice.
  • Propose quality assurance mechanisms and enforce them.
  • Direct teaching and research activities and organize workshops/conferences.
  • Maintain up-to-date records on teaching, research, and consultancy services.
  • Assign teachers, tutors, advisors, and examiners for undergraduate programs.
  • Keep records of teaching load, publications, and public services of each staff.
  • Conduct performance evaluation of academic staff every semester.
  • Ensure the maintenance of proper records of students.
  • Initiate and support extracurricular activities.
  • Conduct meetings with students once per semester.
  • Compile quarterly, biannual and annual performance reports.
